The Tamale Metropolitan Assembly has boycotted a social public
expenditure and financial accountability forum organized by the Northern
Development Society in collaboration with the Local Government geared towards
promoting social accountability in grassroots level.
The objective of the local government is to improve allocation
of public resources, service provision and promote local economic development.
The forum was under the theme ‘Stimulating Demand for
Accountable Local government and Service Delivery.
The forum was attended by some stakeholders including the
media in Tamale.
With this laudable project, the Metropolitan Assembly which
was dully invited failed to attend the forum for what participant described as
a deliberate attempt.
The social public
expenditure and financial accountability (SPEFA) process is the third component
of the local government capacity support project.
In regards to this, a consultancy service has been awarded to
SNV–Ghana to lead a group of civil society organizations for the implementation
of the project.
Briefing the participants Tia Abdulai Kabiru Mahama, Assistant
Project coordinator of the Northern Development Society noted that, the purpose
of the forum is to create a platform for the citizenry to participate in social
development and decision making process with MMDAs in the Assemblies and also
to improve the knowledge of stakeholders in their quest to demanding accountability
from duty bearers.
