Melcom donates expired products to Nyohini Ophanage



The Caretaker of Nyohini Children’s Home, Madam Augustina Quinoo has raised serious concern about the way and manner some organizations and other individual philanthropists donate inferior and expired items to the Children at the Home.
According to her, in as much as they rely mainly on their benevolence to survive, there is still the need for all donors who support the orphanage to observe due diligence to ascertain the validity or otherwise of any product or item they intend to buy for the Home.
Speaking in an interview with Fiila News Madam Quainoo bemoaned that on several occasions, the supervisors at the Nyohini Children’s Home have detected that goods supplied or donated to the children by some organizations and individuals have either expired or nearing their expiry dates.
Meanwhile, Melcom-Ghana, one of the leading shops in Ghana today donated some items to the Nyohini Children’s Home, which were suspected to be nearing their expiry dates.
The products include 50 cartons of Derby and Coffee Cola beverages. A critical check by Fiila News team revealed that the products were almost becoming unwholesome for human consumption.
Instead of disposing the items, the Management of Melcom Tamale decided to donate them to the imates at the Nyohini Children’s Home.
The Northern Regional Director of the Food and Drugs Board Authority (FDA), Mr. Sylvester Kyei tells Fiila News once the product is not expired completely, it can be consumed.
However, in a situation where the expiry date even elapses for a single day it becomes unwholesome.
Meanwhile, when Fiila News contacted management of Melcom-Ghana on the issue they declined comment.

Six impersonators nab by National Service Secretariat in Tamale



The Northern regional Secretariat of the Ghana National Service Scheme has arrested 6 people for impersonating in the ongoing registration of the national service in the Northern Regional Capital Tamale.
The 6 impersonators where arrested on different occasion when they were trying to register.
They have since been submitted to the Northern regional police command.
The suspects are made up of 2 ladies from the institute of Professional studies and the rest of them are purported to be students of the Tamale Polytechnic. 
During a hot chase arrest of one of the impersonator in the person of Jebuni Fuseini today near the regional library, was part of the fifth incident recorded by the Secretariat in the region.
The suspect with an ID of Tamale Polytechnic and an admission form bearing the name Jebuni Fuseini, and a second year student pursuing HND Statistics at the department of Applied Science claimed the document was forged by a friend in Accra who approached him to assist him to get the posting of the national service.
After paying 140 Ghana cedis his accomplish was able to forge the document for him with the registration number.
But after a thorough probing he admitted that he is a second year student of Tamale polytechnic pursuing HND marketing.
He said his act resulted due to financial difficulties to pay his school fees amounting to 500 Ghana cedis.
The Acting Public Relation Officer of the Northern region NSS and also the District Director of the service in the Nanumba South District, Joseph Kumah said the incident is one of the challenges confronting the secretariat across the country.
He said unscrupulous people hack into their system to impersonate. He revealed that last year alone they had 16 of such acts.
Mr. Joseph Kumah suspect some people might be behind the criminal act.
The Northern regional Director of NSS, Alhaji Shaibu Abiwu told Fiila News the suspects were arrested and handed over to the police but due to political pressures from politicians all have been released. When pursued to mention names, he was lip-tight. Tamale Polytechnic has however denied knowing such culprits.   

Tamale Metro Assembly boycotts social accountability forum

The Tamale Metropolitan Assembly has boycotted a social public expenditure and financial accountability forum organized by the Northern Development Society in collaboration with the Local Government geared towards promoting social accountability in grassroots level.
The objective of the local government is to improve allocation of public resources, service provision and promote local economic development.
The forum was under the theme ‘Stimulating Demand for Accountable Local government and Service Delivery.
The forum was attended by some stakeholders including the media in Tamale.
With this laudable project, the Metropolitan Assembly which was dully invited failed to attend the forum for what participant described as a deliberate attempt.
 The social public expenditure and financial accountability (SPEFA) process is the third component of the local government capacity support project.
In regards to this, a consultancy service has been awarded to SNV–Ghana to lead a group of civil society organizations for the implementation of the project.
Briefing the participants Tia Abdulai Kabiru Mahama, Assistant Project coordinator of the Northern Development Society noted that, the purpose of the forum is to create a platform for the citizenry to participate in social development and decision making process with MMDAs in the Assemblies and also to improve the knowledge of stakeholders in their quest to demanding accountability from duty bearers.

Dr. Sagoe retires as CEO of TTH

The Chief Executive Officer of the Tamale Teaching Hospital Doctor Ken Sagoe has handover his tenure of office to Dr. Prosper Akanbong as acting Chief Executive Officer.
The Tenure of office of the CEO was supposed to elapse on today despites calls by opinion leaders and the sector ministry to maintain him on contract basis.
Meanwhile prior to his handing over several groups including the Concerned Citizens Association of Tamale was on his nerves to resign base on what they claimed was a gross incompetence and theft at the Tamale Teaching Hospital.
In a handing over address, Dr. Ken Sagoe said he has retired compulsorily from public service and as Chief Executive Officer of the Hospital from 28th September.
He therefore thanked all stakeholders and collaborators in the hospital for their immense support during his five and half year tenure as the CEO of the Hospital.
Since assumption of office in 2007, the only referral center has received several facelifts ranging from infrastructural to personnel.
After his assumption of office as CEO, the hospital had only 23 doctors and has rose to 120 doctors as at the time Fiila News crosschecked at the hospital records.
Nursing strength has also seen a tremendous increase easing pressure on health workers in the hospital.
Confidential source close to Fiila News also revealed that the CEO has grabbed another reputable intuition outside the borders of the country to man its affairs.

Junior Doctors strike at TTH enters day two

Junior Doctors of the Tamale Teaching Hospital strike action has entered into day two as efforts by authorities to resolve their grievances hits a deadlock.
The junior doctors yesterday embarked on a strike over unpaid fuel allowances for almost three years.
The Doctors say they are not going to rescind their decision until all fuel allowances due them are dully paid.
However, Fiila News has observed that the situation if not addressed immediately is likely to affect health care delivery in the only referral center for residents of the three regions of the North.
In an interview with the President of the Junior Doctors Association of the Tamale Teaching Hospital, Dr. Bentil Wewoli, he said the association is yet to meet the authorities to discuss the matter.
He however indicated that the strike continues unabated pending when the problem would be resolved.
