POLICE RESCUE 30 CHILDREN FROM TRAFFICKERS

The Northern Regional Police Command at the weekend rescued some 30 children who were allegedly being trafficked to engage in tedious jobs in Accra and Kumasi.
The children whose ages range between 2-19 years were travelling on a Metro Mass Bus with registration number AS 9908 Y. The suspected traffickers, a male and a woman have been arrested. Aba Ani Akada, a musician 34 years whilst her accomplice Abanin Akatari Christiana 31 years old.
The Northern Regional Police Public Relations Officer, Chief Inspector Ebenezer Tetteh who confirmed the arrest to the media said the interception was made at a police check point in Tamale based on intelligence report received by his outfit.
He said initial interrogation indicates that the children were possibly victims of the human trafficking menace since contact numbers given to them by the suspected traffickers to speak to the relatives of the children turned out to be a hoax.
According to him, the two persons are currently in the police custody as suspects in child trafficking case.
He said as and when investigations are concluded the will be charge for the offence. Human Trafficking has become a social canker that plagues Ghana particularly in the Northern part of the country where children are often the victims.
They sometimes go beyond the city centers of Ghana into neighboring African countries where they engage in tedious jobs and earn very little at the expense of their education and suffer countless human right abuses.
ASP Steven Tetteh, Northern Regional Police Head in charge of the Domestic Violence Victims Support Unit handled the case whose outfit transferred the suspects to the Upper East Regional Police Command.
The arrest was in line with the Upper East Regional Minister’s declaration of “Zero tolerance” on children under eighteen years migrating to southern Ghana to connect to the “Kayaaye” menace.
